Nitrous Oxide Supplier to Pittsburgh

A colorless, sweet-tasting, oxidizing gas, Nitrous Oxide (N2O) has various commercial applications in Pittsburgh, and Greco Gas is this area’s only distributor of preferred PurityPlus® N2O.

Nitrous Oxide was first produced in 1772 by Joseph Priestly, who dripped nitric acid on iron filings. Though that seems simple enough, a yet simpler method of producing greater amounts of N2O was devised under the purview of Humphry Davy before the turn of the 18th century. It essentially introduces attentively administered heat to ammonium nitrate, which changes the compound into Nitrous Oxide and water. Most N₂O production relies on this methodology, either directly or by a similar means of production using urea and a mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids.

Nitrous Oxide is employed as an anesthetic, as a leak-detection gas, and as an oxidizing agent. An additional customary use for it – particularly by the pharmaceuticals and food-and-beverage industries – is as an aerosol can propellant, most ubiquitously in commercial whipped-cream dispensers.

N₂O is equally efficacious as a specialty oxidizing flame-support gas in atomic absorption (AA) instrumentation for metal analysis. When mixed with specific perfluorinated hydrocarbons, it is a propellant/oxidizer of considerable utility in some special-application rocket guidance systems. When its purity is driven to the highest levels (around 99.995+%, Nitrous Oxide has found some utility in semiconductor fabrication.
