Nitrogen Dioxide Supplier to Pittsburgh

This brownish, toxic, corrosive, liquefied PurityPlus® gas does have its uses, commercially, and Greco Gas makes it readily available to Pittsburgh customers.

Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂) is an atmospheric contaminant produced when fossil fuels combust in an oxygen rich environment; at high ignition temperatures, the oxygen not set ablaze with the fuel reacts with the nitrogen from the air to form nitric oxide (NO) and, in the presence of more oxygen and heat, is further oxidized to NO₂. For commercial use, Nitrogen Dioxide is created in the oxidation of ammonia at well-moderated temperatures in a steam-rich environment.

Nitrogen Dioxide’s most frequent use is in rocket motors, more appropriately in its dimerized state as N₂O₄ (Nitrogen Tetroxide, NOM 4). In this state, it is reacted with hydrazine to provide propulsion. These liquefied gases offer the advantage of long-term storage in space without excessive venting from boil-off, as neither are cryogenic fluids. They are used in positioning motors in orbiting satellites that might need to be relocated later. NO₂ is also used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis and in select applications as a sterilizing atmosphere.

When it’s employed in specialty gas applications, NO₂ is commonly a factor in calibration gases for environmental emission and industrial hygiene oversight.
