Compressed Argon Gas

Greco Gas manufactures and provides PurityPlus® Argon for commercial use in Pittsburgh.

A handful of characteristics helped Argon emerge as an ideal choice for technical applications, such as providing nuclear scientists with the dense atmosphere necessary to single out neutrons, in the waning years of the nineteenth century:

  • its inertness and molecular weight,
  • its comparative abundance in relation to other rare gases, and
  • its commercial availability.

To be sure, the most significant early use for dry, high-purity Argon was gassing the globes in incandescent light bulbs during the first years of the twentieth century. In due course, with the invention and commercial development of gas metal arc (GMAW or MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG), welding in the 1940s needed a dense inert gas, normally Argon-based. While it’s true that none of these are bona fide specialty-gas purity uses, their desirability is stronger than ever and they still represent a large piece of Argon’s sales volume.

Nowadays, the most prevalent specialty gas applications for high-purity Argon include its use as a carrier or background gas in various analytical instrument applications, for example: in the ferreting out and study of trace and ultra-trace elements employing Inductive Coupled Plasma Techniques, in Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption, and in Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Argon is applied as well in many types of Gas Chromatography, particularly those that make use of a high-efficiency Electron Capture Detector (ECD) or an Ultrasonic Detector (USD). It also serves as a carrier gas when analyzing hydrogen in helium with a TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) or USD. With the passage of time, Argon has found its most extensive use in the semi-conductor industry as a carrier/purge gas.
